ADVANCED PRACTICE ON EARTH SCIENCES
The "Geological Field Excursion in Japan," offered as part of the "Advanced Practice on Earth Sciences" (Master's course program), differs significantly from undergraduate excursions and other practical courses within the same program. Please read the following information carefully before applying.
For this course, we will select a 1:50,000 geologic map from the Geological Survey of Japan (or similar institutions) and conduct an excursion within the corresponding (and neighboring) area. The specific map is not predetermined by the instructors. Instead, participants will draw lots to determine the map. Although you may indicate preferred regions before the draw based on budget and other considerations, exclusive selection of the Shikoku region is generally not allowed. Participants may also opt to draw multiple candidate maps and choose one from among them, but the number of candidates should not be excessive. In this case, the final choice of a map will be made through mutual discussion by participants.
In some cases, the selected area may be difficult to access. Nevertheless, we will adhere to the determined area as closely as possible. Make sure your luck is in top shape before the lottery!
Once a geologic map is assigned, participants will be required to conduct preliminary research on the geology of the area using the geologic map and relevant literature. Participants should then identify several potential field stops that appear geologically interesting. Although the instructors may provide guidance if necessary, the primary responsibility for planning the excursion lies with the participants. However, museums and similar institutions should only be selected as excursion stops if absolutely necessary. Once a general plan is established, participants should prepare additional materials, such as topographic maps and other necessary resources, with minimal instructor involvement.
Both before and during the excursion, participants will be expected to present geological features of the area/outcrops to the group based on the geologic map and the preliminary research and to discuss collaboratively with all participants including the instructors. If any unanswered questions arise during the excursion, participants are encouraged to research and clarify them after the excursion, sharing their insights with the group.
Please note that this course does not follow a "traditional" lecture style. Do not expect the instructors to provide extensive explanations, because we will often visit sites that the instructors are unfamiliar with and may have limited prior knowledge of. The primary goal of this excursion is to expand our (including instructors) experience through observation and discussion of what is new to us.
Only apply for the "Geological field excursion in Japan" if you fully agree with the above. If you do not agree, please consider enrolling in a different practical course. If you have any questions, please inquire before submitting your application.
